On 13 May 2026, Prof. Ashwani Mahajan released our research report, “Industry 5.0 – A Growth Strategy for MSMEs.” Developed with contributions from members of our Industry 5.0 community, the report explores how Tamil Nadu’s MSMEs can use Industry 5.0 to advance beyond conventional manufacturing and create higher value through innovation, design, research, and development.

Industry 5.0 builds on the digital transformation of Industry 4.0 by placing greater emphasis on sustainability, resilience, and human–robot collaboration. Given the MSME sector’s central role in employment generation and economic growth in India, the report examines the opportunities, readiness, and challenges associated with Industry 5.0 adoption among MSMEs.

The study draws on field visits to the Sattur Matchworks cluster, analysis of hundreds of automobile-manufacturing processes, discussions with 22 thought leaders from industry, academia, MSMEs, and associations, and a review of nearly 50 reports and research papers. It also includes openly available case studies to help MSMEs understand practical implementation pathways.

Key recommendations include establishing community R&D labs in MSME clusters, creating MSME–Academia–Innovation Hubs, and publishing practical Industry 4.0/5.0 case studies. Guided by the idea of Stan Shih’s Smile Curve, the report highlights how MSMEs can strengthen long-term competitiveness by creating value across the product lifecycle, not only in production.
